Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity Founders

Sigma Alpha Iota was founded on June 12, 1903, in Ann Arbor, MI at the University School of Music. Our seven founders started our cherished sisterhood and grew to include over 300 chapters and thousands of members nationwide.

"Sigma Alpha Iota is an organization which promotes interaction among those who share a commitment to music. Members of SAI are active in all areas of campus music and campus life, working closely with faculty, administration, campus, our community, music professionals and patrons. In addition to personal encouragement and support, members may receive scholarships, loans and awards in many areas and at all levels of music-related study. Sigma Alpha Iota has long been recognized as a leader in the field of music and provides a lifetime of fraternity contact." Our mission statement is, "To encourage, nurture and support the art of music." They decided that this professional organization would grow to spread the importance of women in music, to uphold the highest standards of music, and to further the development of music throughout the world.

"Vita Brevis Ars Longa," is our motto meaning, "Life is short, but art is long."

Delta Beta was chartered on March 22, 1962 at the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. Eventually membership became too low for the sisterhood at Delta Beta to stay running. On February 20, 2011 Delta Beta was reinstalled. We currently have 6 active members that care deeply for this sisterhood and our love for music.
